Top 5 foods for losing weight

Home / Blog / Top 5 foods for losing weight

Following on from last week’s article, this week I will be discussing my top 5 foods to help with weight loss. For a lot of people, losing weight can be really difficult but by including more of these foods in your diet then weight loss can become a lot more successful.

Also, as I said last week, these 5 foods are in no way magic and just because you eat these foods you will not necessarily lose weight. In order to lose weight you must be in a calorie deficit (consuming fewer calories than you are burning) and I have found these 5 foods most beneficial to helping reduce calorie intake and therefore can help aid weight loss.

Cauliflower Rice

Cauliflower rice is a great lower calorie alternative to rice. 1 cup of cauliflower rice has only 47 calories compared to white rice which has 204 calories. I will not go into the details of how to make cauliflower rice but there are plenty of recipes online to help you out.

Spaghetti Squash

Spaghetti squash is similar to cauliflower rice in that it is a good way to reduce carbohydrate intake by replacing a carb sauce with a vegetable alternative. 1 cup of spaghetti squash contains only 31 calories compared to spaghetti which has 221 calories per cup. Neither cauliflower rice or spaghetti squash taste very similar to their higher carb alternatives however they can add volume to your meals and can significantly reduce calorie intake for a variety of meals.

Lean Meats

Lean meats such as chicken breast and lean cuts of beef can be very useful for weightloss. These foods are high in protein and low in both fats and carbs making it a great way to increase protein intake. Protein is great for weight loss as it is more filling than other macronutrients and can help prevent cravings. Protein also has a higher thermogenic effect than both fat and carbohydrates meaning that you burn more calories eating protein.

Vegetable soups generally have a very low energy density as long as they are made without adding high calorie ingredients like butter and cream. By adding water and turning foods into soup, you can increase the volume of the food you are eating and trick yourself into feeling fuller.

Popcorn are a great lower calorie snack. Popcorn has a very low density meaning you get a high volume of food for your calories. Air popped popcorn has only 30 calories per cup however you must be careful with some sweetened popcorns or oil popped popcorn as these can be much higher in calories so make sure you always check the label.
